Which box should you buy for IPTV? The question comes up every week on our chat, often with a false premise: that you need a special “IPTV box”. You don’t. An IPTV subscription runs on any device that can install an app — a $50 Fire TV Stick, the Smart TV you already own, an Android box, a Formuler for enthusiasts, an Apple TV. This guide compares the options sold in Canada, with real prices, strengths, traps, and our recommendation for your situation — after hundreds of installs at customers’ homes from Montréal to Toronto.

Fire TV Stick: the default choice

The Fire TV Stick is the device we install the most subscriptions on, for good reasons: price, simplicity (one voice remote, one HDMI port) and compatibility with every serious app through Downloader.
- Fire TV Stick HD (≈ $35): enough for HD on a bedroom TV.
- Fire TV Stick 4K (≈ $50): the best value — 4K, Wi-Fi 5, fast processor.
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max (≈ $80): Wi-Fi 6 and more memory; TiviMate zapping is instant.
The one drawback: Amazon pushes its own content on the home screen. Two minutes of settings and the IPTV app sits in first position. Detailed guide: Best IPTV for Firestick in Canada.
Smart TV: the box you already own
A Samsung (Tizen) or LG (webOS) from 2019 or later needs no box: HOT IPTV (Hot Player), Ib Player Pro and Smarters Pro install from the TV’s store, and activation is done with the MAC address from your phone. It is the cleanest setup — no cable, no extra remote.
The limits: entry-level TVs have a slow processor (2-3 second zapping), and other brands (Hisense VIDAA, Philips Saphi, Sony Google TV) do not carry every app. On a Sony or TCL Google TV, proceed as on Android TV.
Formuler: TV “like before”, only better
Formuler boxes (Z11 Pro Max, Z8 Pro, GTV) are Android boxes built for IPTV: a remote with channel +/− keys, a built-in and flawless programme guide, recording to a USB stick, catch-up, profiles. MyTVOnline 3 comes pre-installed; enter the portal address and you are done.
It is the choice of people who used to zap on cable and want that comfort back, and of those who record games. The price ($180 to $300) is justified if you watch TV every night; otherwise a Fire TV Stick does 90 % of the job for $50.
Nvidia Shield, Apple TV: the high end
- Nvidia Shield TV Pro: the most powerful Android box, 4K HDR/Dolby Vision, gigabit Ethernet, Plex, gaming. TiviMate is perfect on it. At $260 it is for a home theatre — not required for IPTV alone.
- Apple TV 4K: smooth and reliable, but the ecosystem is more closed: the available apps are Ib Player Pro and Hot Player (MAC-address activation). Excellent if the whole house is on Apple. Apple TV page of the setup guide.
Generic Android boxes: the false bargain
The $40 boxes sold on Amazon or AliExpress under names like T95, X96 or “8K Ultra” are tempting. After dozens of support cases, our opinion is clear-cut: modified Android with no updates, weak Wi-Fi, a processor that overheats, remotes that die. Many “frozen picture” complaints blamed on the subscription actually come from these boxes. For the same money, a Fire TV Stick 4K is faster and updated for years.
What really matters, whatever the device
Connection before box
A Fire TV Stick on Ethernet (official adapter, $20) beats a Shield on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Plan on 25 Mbps for HD, 50 Mbps for 4K, and the 5 GHz band.
Hardware decoding
A device that decodes H.265/HEVC in hardware (Fire TV 4K, Shield, Formuler, recent Smart TV) plays 4K effortlessly. Generic boxes do it in software: they overheat and stutter.
Updates
Amazon, Google, Apple, Samsung, LG and Formuler update their devices for years. A no-name box will never receive anything.
Our recommendation by situation
- Getting started, tight budget: Fire TV Stick 4K ($50) + Hot Player. Nothing to type on the TV.
- You own a recent Samsung or LG: no purchase — HOT IPTV from the TV’s store.
- You zapped on cable and record games: Formuler Z11 Pro Max.
- Apple household: Apple TV 4K + Ib Player Pro.
- Home theatre: Nvidia Shield TV Pro on Ethernet + TiviMate.
- A bedroom TV or the cottage: Fire TV Stick HD ($35).
In every case, test with the 24-hour trial for $2.99 on the device you already have before buying anything: quite often, it is enough.
