Sports is the last reason many Canadian households keep cable: the Canadiens, Leafs or Oilers every second night, the CFL, Raptors and Blue Jays, F1 on Sunday morning, UFC on Saturday night. It is also the most expensive item — the “sports tier” adds $20 to $40 a month to an already heavy bill. This guide walks through every way to watch live sports in Canada without cable, from free to paid, with the channels, the prices, the blackouts, and what actually works on game night.

Who broadcasts what in Canada

Rights are split between a handful of broadcasters; knowing the map avoids paying twice.

Sport Broadcasters in Canada In French
NHL (Canadiens, Leafs, Oilers, Senators…) Sportsnet, TSN, CBC (Hockey Night in Canada), Amazon Prime (Monday nights) RDS, TVA Sports
CFL TSN RDS
NBA (Raptors) TSN, Sportsnet RDS
MLB (Blue Jays) Sportsnet RDS, TVA Sports
MLS, Premier League, Champions League Apple TV (MLS), fuboTV, DAZN, TSN TVA Sports, RDS
F1, tennis (Grand Slams), golf TSN, Sportsnet RDS
UFC, boxing TSN (numbered events), UFC Fight Pass, PPV RDS
World Cup, Euro, Canada national team TSN, CTV TVA Sports, RDS

Option 1 — The official apps, no cable

Every broadcaster now sells its live feed without a cable subscription:

  • TSN+ / TSN Direct: about $20 a month — NHL (regional games depending on your zone), CFL, NBA, F1, tennis, numbered UFC events.
  • Sportsnet+: $25 to $35 a month depending on the tier — NHL, Blue Jays, Raptors on some nights, MLB.
  • RDS Direct: about $20 a month — NHL and CFL in French.
  • Crave with TSN: sports as a paid add-on.
  • Amazon Prime: NHL Monday Night Hockey included with Prime.
  • DAZN, fuboTV Canada, Apple TV (MLS Season Pass): soccer and NFL, $25 to $50 a month each.

The problem is not quality — it is excellent — it is the total: a hockey, soccer and F1 fan quickly stacks TSN+, Sportsnet+ and DAZN, $70 to $100 a month. And NHL regional blackouts apply: a Canadiens game may be reserved to RDS/TVA Sports in Québec and missing from Sportsnet+, or an Oilers game may be blacked out on TSN+ in Alberta.

Option 2 — Antenna and free: what really exists

  • HD antenna ($40 to $80, once): CBC, CTV, Global, CityTV, Radio-Canada, TVA over the air in large cities. You get Hockey Night in Canada on Saturdays and some playoff games, not the season.
  • CBC Gem, Radio-Canada, Tou.tv: a few events (Olympics, Women’s World Cup) for free.
  • “Free” streaming sites: unstable feeds, aggressive ads, malware, cuts at the first goal. We talk about it frankly in Is IPTV legal in Canada? — free always ends up costing something.

Option 3 — IPTV: every sport, one app

An IPTV subscription gathers Canadian, American and international sports channels in a single app, on the Fire TV Stick, the Smart TV, the phone:

The channels in the table above

TSN 1 to 5, Sportsnet (East, Ontario, West, Pacific, One, 360), CBC, RDS, RDS2, TVA Sports 1-2-3, plus ESPN, FOX Sports, NBC Sports, beIN Sports, DAZN and the European channels for soccer.

No regional blackout

Every regional variant of Sportsnet and TSN is present: the Oilers game is on Sportsnet West and TSN, the Canadiens on RDS and Sportsnet East, whatever your postal code.

One price, all included

From $7.50 (yearly) to $20 (monthly) a month for everything — sports, movies and series included. The full grid is in our article on IPTV prices in Canada.

Channels per dollar is what makes the difference: for less than TSN+ alone, you get TSN, Sportsnet, RDS, TVA Sports and the American channels. See the plans and the full IPTV vs cable comparison.

Game night: the settings that prevent freezing

A live game forgives less than a movie: a two-second cut at the moment of the goal is unbearable. Our technicians apply the same rules every time:

A

Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi

2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is the first cause of stuttering. An Ethernet cable (official adapter on Fire TV Stick) or the 5 GHz band fixes most cases on Bell Fibe, Rogers and Videotron Hélix.

B

25 Mbps for HD, 50 Mbps for 4K

Test on fast.com at game time, not at noon. If the connection drops under 25 Mbps, pick the HD feed rather than 4K: the picture stays sharp, with no freezing.

C

The right player and decoder

TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro with ExoPlayer; VLC if a channel stays silent. Hot Player does the same job with nothing to configure.

D

A backup channel

Every game exists on 2 to 4 channels (Sportsnet and RDS, TSN and TVA Sports…). Put them in favourites: if one feed slows down, the other takes over in two clicks.

E

Test before the season

The 24-hour trial for $2.99 on a game night is the best way to validate your connection and device before taking a plan.

The setup guide details these settings for each device; if the picture freezes during a game, the live chat also answers evenings and weekends.

The big dates of the 2026-2027 season

  • NHL: regular season October to April, playoffs April to June — Sportsnet/TSN/CBC, RDS/TVA Sports in French.
  • CFL: June to November, Grey Cup in November — TSN/RDS.
  • Soccer: Champions League (September to May), Premier League (August to May), Canada national team qualifiers and friendlies after the 2026 World Cup — TSN, TVA Sports, DAZN.
  • F1: March to December, including the Canadian Grand Prix in Montréal in June — TSN/RDS.
  • UFC, boxing: numbered events almost every month — TSN, RDS, PPV.

In short

Without cable, three paths: the official apps (excellent, but $70 to $100 a month to cover several sports, with blackouts), antenna and free (partial), or IPTV (every sport in one app, no blackout, from $7.50 a month). Whatever the choice, a game with no freezing depends first on your connection: Ethernet or 5 GHz, 25 Mbps minimum, a backup channel in favourites.
